WIT's OG Head Coach. Hyrox Global MC. Brand Builder. Monsta.
In the latest episode of Dialled-In, we caught up with a bit of a WIT legend. Gus Vaz Tostes, or “Monsta,” as most of you know him, has been part of the WIT family since day one. As the first ever Head Coach at WIT London and a long-standing WIT Ambassador, it only felt right to get an episode in with Gus to see what he’s been up to lately.
Turns out, a lot. Since moving to Portugal with his family, Gus has been travelling the world as a Hyrox MC and has recently set his focus on building his own Hyrox coaching platform, The Hybrid Racer, alongside another legend of the game, Chris Hinshaw. The Hybrid Racer provides all-in-one training solutions for anyone looking to take on Hyrox. With Gus’ expertise in strength and conditioning and Chris’ world-class background in endurance sports, it’s a partnership that makes perfect sense.
Here’s how the catch-up went.
Gus: Hey, Jordan! What’s up?
Jordan: Monsta. Whereabouts are you right now?
Gus: I’m actually in Brazil. Came down for HYROX São Paulo and then made the most of it. Brought the family out for a little holiday too.
Jordan: It’s been a while since we last caught up. You’ve been a massive part of the HYROX journey. What’s been keeping you busy lately?
Gus: I’d say three main things. First, probably what most people know me for now; being the HYROX MC, working the main UK events. Second, about three years ago I started a franchise business in Brazil focused on functional fitness and boutique training. And finally, something I’m really excited about - we’ve just launched our online HYROX training programme Hybrid Racer, in partnership with my good friend Chris Hinshaw, the aerobic capacity master. We’ve also just signed as the official HYROX UK partner, which is really cool.
Jordan: Hybrid training is exploding right now, and Hybrid Racer feels like it’s arrived at the perfect time. How did the idea come to life with Chris?
Gus: Chris and I had always wanted to work together. Talking about HYROX and the hybrid community, we realised there was a massive opportunity to combine our expertise; his aerobic capacity background and my functional training side. That’s how Hybrid Racer was born.
Jordan: I imagine your own training has shifted too; a bit more hybrid these days? And what are you wearing on foot for those sessions?
Gus: Yeah, definitely more hybrid now. Today I’ve got the Puma Deviate Elite 3s on because I’m doing a more performance-based session, the carbon plate helps there. But for my everyday hybrid sessions, I use the Puma Deviates. They’re super comfortable and do everything I need.
Jordan: And I hear there’s something exciting brewing between Hybrid Racer and WIT. What’s the story there?
Gus: Yeah man, Hybrid Racer and WIT are partnering to bring an awesome event to the hybrid community in London. Anyone can get involved; come sweat it out, get race tips, and learn performance strategy straight from us. Just head to the WIT website and sign up. Simple as that.
Jordan: Love it. Well, Gus, it’s been a pleasure as always. Say hello to the family for me, and I’ll see you back in London soon.
Gus: Will do, man. Thanks for the chat. See you very soon.
